What is an Autonomous Agent?
An autonomous agent is an AI system capable of understanding a high-level goal, planning the necessary steps, and executing actions using tools to achieve that goal with limited or no ongoing human instruction.
How does it work?
Autonomy exists on a spectrum. Distinct levels of autonomy include:
- Suggesting an action: The agent proposes a plan but waits for the user to execute it.
- Performing an approved action: The agent takes one step after the user clicks "approve."
- Planning several steps: The agent generates a full itinerary and executes it, pausing only at critical junctures.
- Operating until a stopping condition: The agent runs completely unsupervised until the task succeeds or fails.
What is a common misconception?
Do not imply that every autonomous agent operates without any restrictions or human supervision. Real-world autonomous systems rely heavily on strict guardrails and carefully defined boundaries.
Why does it matter?
Autonomy shifts AI from being a passive tool that answers questions to an active participant that accomplishes work. This drastically increases productivity by automating multi-step digital chores that previously required constant human attention.
