Large Language Model

A deep learning model trained on vast amounts of text to understand, generate, and predict human language.

What is a Large Language Model?

A Large Language Model (LLM) is an artificial intelligence system built on deep learning architecture that has been trained on massive, internet-scale datasets to understand and generate human language.

How does it work?

At their core, LLMs are incredibly advanced autocomplete engines. They analyze the text you provide (the prompt) and calculate the mathematical probability of what the next token (part of a word) should be. By predicting one token at a time very quickly, they can generate coherent paragraphs, translate languages, summarize documents, or write code.

Why does it matter?

LLMs are the foundational technology behind modern generative AI assistants. Because language is the primary way humans communicate complex ideas, a model that can process and generate language accurately can be adapted to perform almost any knowledge-based task, serving as the "brain" for complex software systems.

What is it commonly confused with?

LLMs are often confused with "Foundation Models." All LLMs are foundation models, but not all foundation models are LLMs. A foundation model can be trained on non-language data, such as audio, robotics data, or pure imagery. LLMs specifically focus on language processing.
