Tool Calling

The broader pattern in which an AI system autonomously selects and requests external software capabilities.

What is Tool Calling?

Tool calling is the architectural pattern where an AI system is given access to a suite of external tools—such as web search, code execution, or database querying—and autonomously decides when and how to use them to solve a user's problem.

How does it work?

Tool calling relies on the underlying capability of function calling. In a tool-calling workflow, the AI is presented with a toolbox. It assesses the user's prompt, selects the appropriate tool, generates the required arguments, waits for the software to execute the tool, reads the returned data, and then decides whether it needs to use another tool or can finalize its answer to the user.

What is it commonly confused with?

While function calling is the strict generation of a JSON argument matching a schema, tool calling is the entire orchestration loop of selecting, invoking, and reacting to external software.

Why does it matter?

Tool calling is the definitive mechanism that upgrades an AI from a passive chatbot into an active AI agent. It allows models to overcome their inherent limitations (like lacking real-time data or the inability to perform strict math) by outsourcing those tasks to specialized, traditional software tools.
