Create a Vapi account and build a small assistant with one voice, one model configuration, and a tightly scoped system prompt. Test it in the browser before connecting a phone number or production tool. Add server-side tools only when the conversation needs to read or change business data, and validate every tool argument before execution. Measure latency, interruption behavior, transcription quality, and recovery from silence or failed calls. For outbound calling, comply with applicable consent and telemarketing rules and make the agent's identity clear where required.

For a first evaluation, keep the scope small enough that you can compare the AI-assisted result with a known baseline. Record the configuration, model or workflow choices that produced the result so successful tests can be reproduced. If the product connects to external systems or private data, grant the minimum permissions required and review the provider's current security and data-handling documentation before expanding access.
