Agent-to-Agent Protocol

Also known as: A2A

A protocol designed to help independent AI agents discover capabilities, exchange information, and coordinate work.

What is the Agent-to-Agent Protocol?

The Agent-to-Agent Protocol (A2A) is designed to help independent AI agents discover each other's capabilities, exchange information, and coordinate work across different systems and environments.

How does it work?

A2A provides a standardized language and set of rules for agents to communicate. Instead of a developer manually wiring two applications together, an agent using A2A can broadcast its abilities or request help from another agent that understands the protocol.

What is it commonly confused with?

Do not confuse A2A with the Model Context Protocol (MCP). MCP primarily connects AI applications to tools, resources, and external systems (like databases). A2A primarily supports communication and collaboration between independent AI agents.

Why does it matter?

As more autonomous agents are deployed, they need a way to work together without human intervention. A2A enables a more scalable ecosystem where agents from different providers can seamlessly collaborate to solve complex tasks. Note that universal adoption or guaranteed interoperability is not yet established.
