What is Agentic AI?
Agentic AI refers to a branch or approach within artificial intelligence that focuses on building systems with "agency." Agency means the AI has the autonomy to pursue complex goals over time, adapting to obstacles without needing step-by-step human instructions for every minor hurdle.
How does it work?
Agentic systems are built by combining a powerful reasoning model (usually an LLM) with access to a suite of external tools (like web browsers, code interpreters, and APIs). The model acts as the "brain," analyzing a high-level goal, generating a sequence of tool calls to achieve it, and evaluating the results of those tool calls to decide its next move.
What is a simple example?
If you ask a standard generative AI to "Research competitors," it will output a summary based on its training data. If you ask an agentic AI system to do the same, it will autonomously open a web browser, search for the latest competitor news, read the articles, compile the data into a spreadsheet, and email you the file.
Why does it matter?
As models become more capable, simply generating text is no longer the ceiling of usefulness. Agentic AI is critical for fully automating business processes, transitioning AI from a passive brainstorming tool into an active participant in the digital workforce.
