Generative AI

Artificial intelligence capable of creating new text, images, code, or other media based on learned patterns.

What does Generative AI mean?

Generative AI refers to algorithms that can be used to create new content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos. Unlike older AI systems that were primarily analytical (e.g., predicting if an email is spam), generative systems produce novel outputs.

How does it work?

Generative AI models are trained on massive datasets. They learn the underlying structure, grammar, and probability distributions of the data. When given a prompt, they use this learned knowledge to generate new data that resembles the original training set but is entirely unique.

What is a simple example?

An analytical AI model can look at a spreadsheet of sales data and predict next quarter's revenue. A generative AI model can take that prediction and write a polished, professional email to the board of directors summarizing the findings and generating an accompanying presentation slide.

Why does it matter?

Generative AI has democratized content creation and accelerated workflows across nearly every industry, from writing code and drafting legal documents to creating marketing assets and synthesizing research. It represents the shift of AI from a backend analysis tool to a creative, user-facing collaborator.
