Reasoning Model

An AI model optimized to spend additional computation time generating intermediate steps before answering complex problems.

What is a Reasoning Model?

A reasoning model is an industry term for an AI model that has been specifically trained to pause and compute intermediate steps before outputting a final answer. Unlike standard models that begin streaming their response immediately, reasoning models allocate extra computational time to "think through" the problem.

How does it work?

Standard models generate their answers token-by-token in a single forward pass, which makes them fast but prone to logical errors on complex tasks. Reasoning models are trained (often using reinforcement learning) to generate a hidden "chain of thought." They explore different approaches, recognize their own mistakes, and backtrack internally before finally producing the visible answer for the user.

What is it commonly confused with?

Do not confuse a reasoning model with a system that actually possesses human reasoning or consciousness. The model is still performing statistical prediction; it has simply been heavily optimized to predict the step-by-step logic required to solve a problem rather than just guessing the final answer.

Why does it matter?

Reasoning models unlock AI's ability to tackle problems that cannot be solved with pattern recognition alone, such as advanced mathematics, deep coding architecture, and complex logic puzzles.
