Create a Portkey project and integrate the gateway into a non-production environment before changing live model traffic. Configure one provider and model first, verify request and response behavior, then add fallbacks or routing rules deliberately. Keep provider credentials in secure server-side configuration and decide what prompt or response data may be logged before enabling observability. Monitor latency, errors, cost, and fallback frequency after rollout. Treat gateway configuration as production infrastructure: version important changes, restrict administrative access, and test failover rather than assuming it works.

For a first evaluation, keep the scope small enough that you can compare the AI-assisted result with a known baseline. Record the configuration, model or workflow choices that produced the result so successful tests can be reproduced. If the product connects to external systems or private data, grant the minimum permissions required and review the provider's current security and data-handling documentation before expanding access.
